Accreditation Award Categories

There are three categories of accreditation awards:

  • Accreditation 7 years
  • Accreditation 2 years
  • Candidacy Status

Accreditation 7 Year
The program is awarded Accreditation for 7 years when it has demonstrated:
  • evidence of compliance with all nine (9) core criteria, and
  • evidence of meeting a minimum of 12 of all the other criteria (12/15).
Accreditation 2 Year
The program is awarded Accreditation for 2 years when it has demonstrated:
  • evidence of compliance with a minimum of 6 (but less than 9) core criteria or
  • a minimum of 9 (but less than 12) of all other criteria.
The program’s accreditation award length will be extended to 7 years from the date of the Accreditation Council decision if the program is able to demonstrate that it meets the criteria within the specified 2- year period.
Candidacy Status
A new program will be awarded candidacy status if the Accreditation Council is satisfied that it demonstrates satisfactory progress toward the compliance with the accreditation standards, and that the program does or will be able to meet the requirements for a 2-year status within 12 months. A site visit review will occur at least 4 months before the first cohort graduates.

Accreditation Award Decision Making

The focus of decision-making is on how evidence supports the program’s compliance with the Accreditation Standards, including:

  • Appropriateness and effectiveness of governance structures, program policies and procedures to support student achievement, curriculum planning, delivery and evaluation.
  • Adequacy of resources in terms of academic/professional and support staff, physical, financial, learning and technical resources to provide quality education.
  • A systematic continuous evaluation process to assess program effectiveness and learning outcomes.

Based on this definition and on the Accreditation Standards, nine (9) core criteria have been identified:

  • Governance: 1.1, 1.4
  • Student Support: 2.2
  • Curriculum: 3.1, 3.4
  • Academic, Staffing: 4.2, 4.3
  • Physical Resources: 5.3
  • Evaluation: 6.1
